The insane tech job market of 2021 in Ukraine
- magneticnorth 5y agoThe salary numbers are by month but I couldn't find clarification for the currency meant by "$". Are tech salaries in the Ukraine typically reported in USD?
- stoune 5y agoYes, the contract are tied to the USD, but paid in local currency Gryvna (UAH). Because we have a quite high inflation and had large dips in the past, especially when the Russia started invasion to Crimea and Donetsk region.
- kofejnik 5y agoYes
- bob667 5y agoThere is nothing on that page that says the figures are per month
- anm89 5y agoI was going to say, i know salries can be low in Ukraine but $770 a year is beyond the pale. It should be labeled more clearly rhat these are monthly
- vadymB 5y agoit's Ukrainian specifics - all salaries are monthly because they could change more than once a year
- temp 5y agoAre those net or gross?
- maiia_bocharova 5y agoWe pay 5% tax (we work as Provate entrepreneurs), so there is not a big difference between gross and net for us.
- maiia_bocharova 5y ago*Private entrepreneurs
- andrii_ao 5y agogross, but the taxes is super low in Ukraine (at least for programmers). Most of the programmers pay 5% from salary + 50$
- elagrion 5y agoGross. Most programmers will work as independent contractors and pay 5% in taxes. But keep in mind, 0 goes to your saving programs / pension and you have 0 employment protection, as you are not an employee, but private entrepreneur. You need to do plan for your retirement / unemployment entirely by yourself. The rent in Kyiv is $500 for a shoebox and $1000 for something adequate. Starting salary is $600-800 per month. So, you can afford a shoebox and to eat shit as junior dev :). Which is still better than a lot of industries here. As high skilled engineer with 10 years of experience I make an $96 000 yearly, but I work directly for UK fintech company. All things included SE still make a lot of money here, but nothing crazy. And trust me, living in California beats living anywhere in Ukraine at any day.
- bauskas 5y agoUkrainian engineer here. All compensations are quoted net. I don't know why people are telling you otherwise.
- killingtime74 5y agoEven now the 3.5k monthly is probably Less than SV engineers pay in tax
- samspenc 5y agoPer this caveat in the description of the salary chart: "Excludes candidates with less than two years of experience and/or poor English skills." My guess is that this data set is skewed towards the most highly paid engineers who speak English and have some work experience, so my guess is true average / median is closer to $2000. EDIT: missed the next paragraph where they actually add more details on this demographic: "The average salary for junior hire was $770 this year, almost the same as before the pandemic."
- vecinu 5y agoSV engineers pay close to that for a 1 bedroom apartment. You'll have a higher quality of life in Ukraine with $3.7k than you would with $7.4k (after tax) in SV.
- legerdemain 5y agoNot sure I'd want to build a career in a country about to be violently partitioned by world powers. Low cost of living is one thing, tanks and rocket launchers in the streets are another. Best of luck to Ukrainian devs in relocating to more expensive, but less perilous countries!
- andrii_ao 5y agoYou are right, but it's not super dangerous in the country. We haven't got tanks and rockets in the city and war only in the East of Ukraine.
- bdnews 5y agoUkraine as a country is not going anywhere, relax, partitioned or not it is still viable place to work/live/invest to. Rather unlikely it to disappear, unless WW3 which is effectively destroying everybody's career around the world pretty much
- vadymB 5y agoUkrainian devs live in this situation for almost 8 years already, look at Israel - they are at war for more than 50 years now
- aymkin 5y agoNOTE all Ukrainian salaries for IT are in $ per month
- kengu_rut 5y agoIt's true. Our job market went nuts in 2021.
- iKororo 5y agoDISCLAIMER These are _montly_ gross salaries. The tax is about 5%, so you can think of it as net salaries.
- bauskas 5y agoWhy are you posting this? The salaries are always quoted net here.
- putsan 5y agoIt's TOP platform in Ukraine
- VictorCTO 5y agoThe exact numbers are higher for 10-15% at least. I Used to involve Ukrainian developers from 2008. Figures are not correct.
