Ask HN: Where's multi-az?

Deployment to multiple availability zones is often touted as a must for serious web apps/sites. How come today's AWS issue is so impactful? Do people actually use multi-az in practice? If so, what does it tell us about az (non)isolation that something can affect several at once?
