Caterwaul: A JavaScript-to-JavaScript Compiler
- cerved 5y ago"I recommend that you don't use Caterwaul because it's a monstrosity. However, if you're adventurous and self-destructive, here's how to go about it." lol
- lelandfe 5y agoSo this is sort of PostCSS but for JS?
- hutzlibu 5y agoI never used PostCSS, but from what I understand, not really. It seems to be a very arcane way of dealing with javascript. And you have to know about compilers to make any use of it. And I know a bit about compilers but so far I have no idea, how I could use it for my needs. But it seems to be some serious engeneering.
- eatonphil 5y agoThere is also a literate markdown version of the implementation if I'm reading it correctly. https://github.com/spencertipping/caterwaul/blob/1.3-es5/src/caterwaul.md https://github.com/spencertipping/caterwaul/blob/1.3-es5/src...
- sebastianconcpt 5y agoWhat's the applicability of it?
- hutzlibu 5y agoFrom the website: "If you see merit in the linguistic features of Haskell, APL, Lisp, and Perl, then you will probably also see merit in the things that Caterwaul tries to achieve" So basically, it aims to make it easy, to integrate other language features into javascript. Or make a totally new language and compile to js. Right now it seems to be for compilerguys only ...
- sebastianconcpt 5y agoGot it. You can add Smalltalk to that list as it can compile in itself (and for some even the VM source code).
