I have aphantasia, I've never been able to see anything in my head, but during the end of my eight years in jail I would sometimes sit on my bunk thinking, and four times I suddenly had images appear in my mind. Once was an apple, once a car, once a cat and once a beach scene with a boat.
Each of these was so utterly mind-blowing to me. It was the equivalent of taking a caveman and sticking the latest Oculus headset on him. It was hard to even comprehend what was happening.
The images only appeared for a few seconds, but each time I tried harder to hold the image and I managed to get each to last longer than the previous one. It's never happened again since and I don't know what triggered it.
It made it clear to me that the condition isn't terminal. The hardware is obviously there, it's just the software that's the problem.
