I too have some curiosity here as my mental image experience is not "vivid" per-se but rather is more like a cloudy feeling of visualness. I can reference parts of the image and sometimes remember specific minute detail but there is no ability to grasp new ideas from this image. It's also not in my eyes but feels "up" or floating somewhere.
I would bet that this characteristic is not black-and-white but rather a spectrum from eidetic memory to no visual manifestations.
