I think there's an underlying reason why people are hesitant to donate money to a cause because if even a software foundation predicated on open source and transparency can't get money into the hands of open source projects then publicly funded donations are a really bad bet for making the world a better place.
- cinntaile 5y agoThis is a bit ridiculous. It's called the Linux Foundation, not the Linux Kernel Foundation. The Linux Foundation is for the open source community in general hence why not all money ends up being used for coding the kernel. It's not even being used just for open source code, it is no secret at all that the open source community is more than just code. They spend 6 million usd on the linux kernel. Just because you throw more money at a problem doesn't mean the end result will turn out better.

- Out_of_Characte 5y agoWhen you call something the Linux foundation I would expect money to go to projects involving linux. I would have no issues if they grant money to anything that remotely involves linux. The sheer amount of open source developers that are barely receiving donations trough their own sourcing is staggering. every week I can find posts on HN about marketing your projects and the struggles of advertising or improving their project. The philosophy of building free and open source software and merit shall grant you monetisation is completely dead to me. There's no way human group dynamic would sustain this if the Linux foundation with their 177 million is enough to cause such a divergence from any semblance of this core idea.
