When a Genetic Disorder Discovery Is Unwelcome News
- josephcsible 5y agoIMO, if you have evidence that someone has a disease that's treatable now but won't be by the time they'd figure it out on their own, not telling them is the most unethical thing you can do, and any red tape that would keep you from telling them needs to be repealed.
- olliej 5y agoOn the other hand, back when insurance companies could deny coverage for pre existing conditions, if you did know and didn’t tell them about a pre-existing condition they were able to deny coverage and drop you when something happened that would be expensive. Even if it were unrelated - I know that there were stories (I don’t know if true) of insurance companies doing this because people didn’t report having acne when they were young (presumably the kind that required medication). There are also questions like what do you do if there is no treatment available - imagine a disease that simply kills you when you turn 27 - would you want to know when you were 10?
