You linked to one specific comment. If you zoom out and view the entire thread, starting with the first comment on that story, you’ll find plenty of comments defending the current state of USB.

- ksec 5y agoYes. And imagine from 2015 to ~2019 I was the only few who voiced those concern, even before the Google engineers raised awareness of non-standard confirming USB-C. Getting downvoted every time while 95% of the comments were in strong support of USB. The only way to solve a problem is to first accept we have a problem. And we aren't quite there yet.
- smcl 5y agoHere's the top few replies to the submission that comment is replying to: - person saying they've only had a smooth experience with USB-C cables - person acknowledging that this is complex and is grateful someone took the time to make the article - someone lamenting that it's hard to know cable capabilities - person asking for advice on some BIOS modes - someone saying USB-C solved some problems but also created others - someone annoyed about the amount of cables they have to have now - someone wishing it was simpler to find out capabilities of cables - someone saying they were probably lucky but they only ever had one problem with USB-C I've seen a couple of "works for me, maybe read the packaging on the cables?" replies but honestly my impression is not that HN commenters are dismissive of how USB cables are confusing, but that many are themselves irritated with the state of affairs. If you were personally treated badly after expressing this opinion here then that sucks and I'm sorry, but you can definitely count yourself among the majority of people (myself included) on this site who wish it was a little clearer.
