I blame Sony. They pushed expensive HDMI 2.1-compatible TVs and receivers alongside the PS5, strongly implying that without a 2.1-compatible living room then you might as well be playing your PS5 through a black-and-white TV.
Of course the PS5 can't really exploit any of the features of HDMI 2.1, and then it turned out that most/all 2.1-compatible receivers and TVs have glaring errors and incompatibilities that render them effectively useless.
