Thanks for pointing this out. A lot of people on HN seem to instinctively deride Facebook, but this statements is not wrong -- Facebook is a tool for communication, and how people use it is not entirely in its control. At best you could argue that their algorithms might have promoted misinformation since it got more engagement, but I suspect the opposite was true.
