Apple CCP $275B deal included Maps changes for disputed islands
- mrkramer 5y agoGoogle somehow and somewhat stayed true to its motto "Don't be evil" and shut down their censored Chinese Google Search project but Apple is straight out evil and dancing with the devil.
- sandstrom 5y agoI think all western companies should try to reorganize supply chains such that they rely as little as possible on China. Reasonable Western governments should support this, and enact policies to speed this up. Obviously something that takes time, but the alternative is to gradually become a slave under China.
- mthoms 5y ago> Going by either the Senkaku Islands or the Diaoyu Islands, depending on which side of the argument you’re taking, they inspired a request from China to members of the Maps team to make them appear larger, even when viewers are zoomed out on the map. According to The Information, not only did Apple eventually make the change, but even today, for viewers using its map from within China, the islands are still shown at a larger scale than the territories around them. Surely, altering the physical reality of Earth to appease the CCP is going too far. This isn't just a territorial dispute that can be addressed using different labels, this is subverting the very purpose of maps themselves. They might as well be changing the outcome of 2 + 2 because the CCP told them to. I'm an otherwise happy Apple customer but I find this absolutely appalling.

- kristianp 5y agoWhy would China want the islands to look bigger? I can't think of a reason.
- mensetmanusman 5y agoIf they are drawn to scale, even the most biased individual would wonder why they are sending people to die to defend it.
- tticvs 5y agoIf the islands appear bigger then the struggle to control them appears more worthy. Hard to get anyone enthusiastic to fight over small rocks in the sea.
- mads 5y agoThis is so incredibly disrespectful of Apple. Behind their shiny facade hides a rotten company with no morals. So now they are just tools in the CCP propaganda machine. I have bought my last Apple product for sure. I would like to know at which point would they say no. Anything goes as long as they are paid.
