I found that using CMake with C++ was a pretty okay process on windows, despite not having much experience with windows. I have to run cmake and then msbuild and I don't really know the details, but I got a simple GUI application running with wxWidgets on windows, and I don't need to use the Microsoft IDE. I'm happy to share more details if anyone is interested. It was a nightmare to figure out how to do it, though.
