When the officer asks “do you know how fast you were going” What do you say? “I plead the fifth” and get the maximum ticket or have backup called on you who arrives aggro with no context? “I didnt know” and get your ability to have a license questioned? Incriminate yourself the other way by knowingly potentially speeding? All while you could totally get a warning or lesser fine if you actually did talk to the police Am I missing something? Is this subtle hyperbole?

If you are smart you can probably talk to the police and avoid annoying them while also avoiding incriminating yourself. ie “How fast were you going” “I thought I was just going with the flow of traffic”. Dumb people or people involved in something more serious than a traffic stop are probably have more to lose by talking though.

You can politely ask why you were pulled over. - P: Do you know how fast you were going? - Did I break the speed limit, officer? - P: I asked if you know how fast you were going. - Did you pull me over for breaking any laws, officer? - P: Why are you evading my question? - I'm just wondering about the reason for this stop. Could you please let me know?

"Am I required by law to respond to your questions? If not then I respectfully will remain silent as is my right" Then hand them your drivers license and insurance card as that is required by law in all 50 states. Keep your hands on the steering wheel at all times.

I had a friend who responded: "you tell me."

In the follow-up video, he addresses this. He clarifies that traffic stops are different and it's ok to talk to the police during traffic stops. Just don't talk any more than necessary, etc. I have timestamped it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIt-l2YmH8M&t=503s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIt-l2YmH8M&t=503s
