Woman with signal blocked-TV loses appeal contesting her obligation to pay NHK
- forinti 5y agoThe article doesn't clarify what this TV is for. Couldn't she swap it for a monitor?
- josephcsible 5y ago> if a television can [...] be modified to receive a signal–in this case, with a signal booster–then the owner of the television is obligated to pay the annual fee. Is there an example of a television that cannot be modified to receive a signal? What makes a monitor not count as a television?
- meitham 5y agoWe have a very similar tax system in the UK called “TV Licence”. Originally it was aimed at live broadcast but now includes BBC on demand such as iPlayer.
- toomuchtodo 5y agoIn the US we have a property tax on each property, is there any reason the TV license tax couldn’t be rolled into the UK version of that? I don’t owe PBS a tax, for example, but it comes out of the US federal budget (with donations making up a smaller contribution to their budget). It just seems odd that the UK has stuck to this funding mechanism for a national public good when there are other more frictionless options.
