There are no fiber ISP in my area, so I’m wondering a couple of things.
I only see a single copper 8P8C cable connected to the router in the picture. Looks like it would do nothing in that configuration. Is the fiber coming in through the wall and directly into the router?
And I’m also surprised that all the ‘good’ packets are 70-80ms latency (assuming those pings are from the CO to you and your neighbors houses). That seems pretty bad for a 1Gb/s Ethernet connection IMO.
Is ‘Fiber To The Home’ somehow different from standard Ethernet over fiber optic cables?
- InvaderFizz 5y agoIf you google for Calix 716GE-I R2 you'll see how the SC fiber is connected. Most GPON consumer units have the SC connector on the bottom, this one has it on the top, under a cover. Still, it doesn't look like it's connected to anything in that picture in his blog, even though the Broadband light indicates it is. Maybe it's black and it's connected to the wall underneath the ONT.
- manbart 5y agoI actually did look it up before I posted. As you say, there is an SC connector (green, so I assume single mode angle polish, which makes sense for long distance connection) under the panel above the power.
- fergbrain 5y agoThe way Lumen (née CenturyLink) typical install these units is to have a splice point outside in a box and then drill a hole inside and mount another cable management rig that the Calix snaps into. It basically feeds the fiber in from the back and you can catch a catch a glimpse of the white sheathing in the bottom corner as it loops from behind and into thr ONT.

That seems pretty bad for a 1Gb/s Ethernet connection IMO. That is really, really bad for fiber. Optical is effectively latency free because the distance is so short (from light's perspective). They should be seeing low single digit to the teens from the ONT to the OLT. If you ping Google it should be similar (low teens is normal on my setup).
