could you elaborate please? I'm especially interested in the Play/Akka part. So what would the alternatives look like, using common Java Frameworks instead or n

  Depends on what you're trying to do. For example I think that Lightbend is no longer planning to maintain Play. I would probably go with Spring as a replacement. For Akka, do you really need it? You have to be building a pretty specific kind of system to need it over simpler constructs built into the language.
