Ask HN: Top tech stack for small businesses?
I am curious which tech stack would be in highest demand among small businesses?
I see a lot of posts about developers favorite tech stacks. I can go on github and see the trending or most stars for top projects.
But if you wanted to do some side work for small business, what tech stack is most used?

- gregjor 5y agoThere’s no demand for “tech stacks” in small, medium, or large business. The demand is for solutions to business problems. Those solutions may involve software. The form the software takes — the “stack” — is largely irrelevant. The only time companies care about languages and tools and frameworks is when they have committed to those already and need people who can work effectively with what they have. No business ever had the requirement “We need 10,000 lines of Javascript” (or Rust, or anything). I think you misunderstand the difference between solutions and tools. “Small business” is not a market for software and services, either. That term describes everything from coffee shops and restaurants to dry cleaners to lawyers to nail salons.
- tmaly 5y agoI guess I am really trying to get an idea of what most solutions use. Are 50% of the businesses just using Excel/Google docs or are they doing lots of Zapier etc.
- gregjor 5y agoThat’s kind of like asking what most people eat for breakfast. Excel is certainly widely used. WordPress, Shopify, platforms like that give small business an easy way to get on the web. I work with small businesses and I’d say it’s a big mix of stuff. The important thing is learning and understanding business domains.
- square_usual 5y agoWhatever you're familiar with. Unless you have specific requirements otherwise, just write what you're most productive in. Ultimately, it's the product that'll sell, not your code.
- kajuan 5y agoI couldn't agree more with previous comments. Moreover, I bumped into an article https://computools.com/custom-software-development-for-small-businesses/ https://computools.com/custom-software-development-for-small... It describes custom software development for small business needs in today's market.
- codingdave 5y agoSalesforce. Small biz (in general) doesn't do fully custom code. They simply don't have the budget for it. But they do sales, so often have a CRM, and Salesforce is the leading CRM. When they need to start having some custom work, adding some new forms and workflows in Salesforce is often step 1. Adding custom code in Salesforce is step 2. And if they grow beyond that... they are no longer a small biz. If you really want to work for small biz, you will be implementing other SaaS products, not writing new ones. And that is completely legit work, with plenty of opportunity. Just maybe not the type you were hoping for.
- tmaly 5y agoI am just curious to know where such efforts could provide the most value. If it is in setting up and building out something like salesforce I have no issues
- codingdave 5y agoI'd look into it, then. It hits a sweet spot with companies that are small, but still make enough money to pay for consultants. You also will find tiny biz using Wordpress, Shopify, and other such apps, but those folks tend to be so small that they have to scrounge to find 50 bucks to pay for you to do something small, so they don't make the best customers.
- PestoDiRucola 5y agoThe best tech stack is the one you know best. Especially for a small business where timing is everything.
