Ask HN: How to Get Media Coverage?
We want to get some press coverage for the startup. I've been told there are numerous platforms like prowly. But it looks too advanced. Any tools which help with press releases and media contacts?
- niros_valtos 5y agoIt depends on the audience you are targeting. If it is the audience on HN, here is a good way to do it: https://blog.arnica.io/hacking-hacker-news-for-fun-and-profit-part-1-41bd6a48a2c2 https://blog.arnica.io/hacking-hacker-news-for-fun-and-profi...

- PaulHoule 5y agoIdeally you would have connections with people in the media developed over a long period of time or know some people who do. Barring that you need something really newsworthy. You should read or watch the news and keep track of the names of the bylines. Try to understand what those people think is newsworthy and give them what they need to produce their product. You can cold pitch anyone with a byline once, so it had better be good. Be "notorious". You could be on TV tomorrow if your murdered your cofounder. - waterchiller 5y agoSounds like a full-time job!)
- PaulHoule 5y agoIf you hire a PR person they do they work it for you.
- waterchiller 5y agoYeah, I was wondering if there any platform/ tool/ service that I can use instead, like press release distribution but with more control of what's happening. Like picking journalists and also maybe with hints on press release writing...
- surfingsunnydog 5y agohey guys, there is prowly (good for late-stage startups also used by PRs a lot), there is HARO (not the best tool, but something), PRGuy.io - they give you a pitch template and lists of journos (maybe the best for you for now), also you can use Tweetdeck hashtags (journorequest and your topic), PRnewswire-like press release distribution platforms (helps with SEO).
- waterchiller 5y agointeresting, will try, ty
- ksaj 5y agoCheck out HARO https://www.helpareporter.com/ https://www.helpareporter.com/ You basically check off areas of interest, and reporters looking for interview and content sources check off their applicable areas and write a brief description of what they're looking for. Those matches are sent out in regular digests throughout the day.
- waterchiller 5y agoThanks! I tried it – there is a lot of spam there, replied to a couple of requests, but no luck. Will keep monitoring then.
