When do the lawsuits start against YouTube for demonetizing independent news?
I've lost count on how many independent news orgs have said their news stories have been demonetized or blocked because of some made up reason by YouTube. Then YouTube will gladly run corporate news videos from CNN or MSNBC that use the same video from the independent news org. This is quite obvious collusion between YouTube and the major corporate news orgs. Also they are blocking stories that make people in power uneasy.
If you listen to newest episode of Breaking Points. They say they have been demonetized just for reporting on CNN and the Cuomo brothers. https://open.spotify.com/episode/4qXx9lOhB4APrV3HecKiEv at 1:25
This has also happened to Status Coup news org repeatedly and has repeatedly been demonetized.

- coding123 5y agoTo simply answer the question... when one is filed.
- uberman 5y agoIt would be great to tie this into an actual event, otherwise it reads like an unsubstantiated random rant. I'm not saying Youtube does not do this, just that your assertion that it does would be much stronger with a tie-in.

- PaulHoule 5y agoWhat's the basis for this? The first amendment limits what the government can do to limit speech but it doesn't mandate that any private organization has to give you free resources to spread your message.
- DonnyV 5y agoWhen the private org has a monopoly on online video. I think it falls under free speech. Also don't play that free resource line. YouTube makes money off of every video from ads.
- PaulHoule 5y agoBack in the 1950s there were the ABC, NBC and CBS TV networks (no monopoly) but none of them were interested in anything new, different, or radical. Youtube appears to be post-scarcity at the moment but if there was any real scrutiny or unbundling it would appear otherwise. My estimate is that a fair price for online video is somewhere around 10 cents an hour with some additional storage cost that matters if you have storing a huge amount of unwatched videos. (e.g. another 10 cents per hour a month at AWS prices, which are high.) So far as ad revenue goes I think advertisers don't want to be next to things that are hateful or controversial. They don't want to be associated with white people who hate black people, black people who hate white people, people who hate themselves and everybody else like WheatWaffles, etc.
- dredmorbius 5y agoIt seems to me the argument is less one of free speech than of monopoly abuse and playing an anticompetitive role in unfairly advantaging one set of producers over another. In this case (as with many), favouring those who already have some power over those with little or none. That's an inherent problem in any power-sensitive hierarchy, and one that isn't likely to be readily resolved. That doesn't excuse YouTube for perpetrating the inequity.
- sigmaprimus 5y agoI went down this rabbit hole as it is easy to get sucked in, the thing is I am not a super smart political science expert yet somehow I managed to find these stories that were supposedly being quashed by an evil cabal of leftist tech corps and socialist media. The truth is the majority of people don't care and are succeeding in life while conspiracy theorists draw more and more victims into their bent views of the world and desperately desire them to obsess over these same issues to justify their wasted lives. This hurts generally good people with impressionable minds by implying that the rest of the world is crazy. Unless You are directly involved in politics and or media, I feel You are far better off to focus on your own issues before You get left behind. You risk ending up watching all the "sheep" build successful lives while You end up blaming the world for all your problems in life and eventually become one of the conspiracists drawing more people in to a vicious self fulfilling cycle(Very similar to a drug addicts self destructive spiral). Good luck
- DonnyV 5y agoThis isn't about conspiracy theorists. This is about legitimate independent news being demonetized. Pay attention please.
- sigmaprimus 5y ago>>> This is quite obvious collusion between YouTube and the major corporate news orgs. Also they are blocking stories that make people in power uneasy. sure sure, no conspiracy at all.
- rolph 5y agothere is a point when you are acting like something and having similar influence. example 1 gypsy cabs, call themselves rideshares, paidpool, delivery etc. they are quacking like a cab, waddling like a cab thus they are a cab, and must play by the rules. example 2 FAANG s call themseves services, or subscriptions, but are behaving in the manner of a government, in particular the number of people they effect with policies and actions. Around here governments are elected, must contend with the will of the people they are trusted to facilitate, and have clearly defined rules.
- mikewarot 5y agoLawsuits can't solve this, but if enough people get upset by it, they'll route around it, and the source of the problem.
