What’s Behind Global Vaccine Hesitancy
- ralusek 5y ago> Omicron prompted a great, big “I told you so.” Based off of what, the assumption that it arose in an unvaccinated person? The working theory I've seen is that it evolved all of its mutations within a single immunocompromised individual. This would clearly be possible, vaccinated or not. The lion's share of the mutations exist in the spike protein antigen. If the individual had been vaccinated, the greatest selective pressure on the virus would've been on that antigen, given that all but the attenuated virus vaccines produce an immune response to that single antigen. I'm vaccinated, I think that the vaccines are effective at certain things within certain windows of time, but their epidemiological role being laid out as binary is highly overstated and oversimplified.
- peteradio 5y agoI figured it would be a "told you so" for those who doubted long term efficacy. Pfizer didn't want to let that dangle in the wind too long, so they went directly to the public and told them to just get a booster "ya'll'll getcher antibodies back right quick no problem". Wow really? Thanks so much pfizer for your clearly unconfounded direct to public advice.
- thuccess129 5y agoI know about virus this much: what is a virus? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tryg5UCp6fI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tryg5UCp6fI I know Dana White of UFC was vaxed and still he got the virus over his thanksgiving break and was cured within a week. I didn't want to take the vax shots, travel to my doctor was too difficult to figure it out, I have had 1 of the 2 required Pfizer shots needed for access to public space. They had 3 brands available and Moderna was in the middle. The consent form detailed complications and you sign on the dotted line knowing bad things may happen to cover people's asses.

- tinus_hn 5y ago> New variants can emerge wherever populations remain unvaccinated. I’d expect science distrust due to scientists and the media spouting these kinds of easily disproven blanket statements to be a major driver of vaccine hesitancy. Keep in mind that covid-19 spreads through wildlife and vaccines do not grant a large amount of protection against spread (declining from about 80% to about 20% in about 6 months). So to pin the blame squarely on unvaccinated people is unwarranted. The reality is that new variants can emerge anywhere and vaccination is not going to end the emergence of new variants.
