New Zealand plans to ban smoking for the next generation
- _Microft 5y agoThe method to implement the ban is quite interesting: they plan to raise the minimum age for buying tobacco by one year per year. That is if someone is not old enough to buy tobacco when such legislation takes effect, they will never be. Let's hope that teenagers also understand that this means that if they smoke despite not being legally allowed to do so yet, they will have problems procuring tobacco for the rest of their lives.
- HamburgerEmoji 5y agoIf you want to play this authoritarian game, let me take my shot. Whatever age you are now plus one is now the minimum age to purchase sugar or anything with sugar in it, and the minimum age will increase by one year each year from now on. So, you will have trouble procuring sugar for the rest of your life. How do you feel about that? It's a good thing, right?
- dazc 5y agoSpeaking from the UK, most people began smoking before the legal age. I can't see this move having much effect unless it is rigorously enforced?
- mattrighetti 5y agoProhibitionist laws never work, my friends started at 14-15-16 years old and legal age here is 18. Literally you can’t stop someone from doing things if they want to do it, the best thing you can do is educate someone that smoking in for sure not in his/her best interests and pray that he/she will make smart decisions moving forward.
