I wonder what academia (sociology, anthropology) says about the issue. Any pointers?

  Janis Ian's "Groupthink" is the obvious one. Then there's the paper "Knee Deep in the Big Muddy" on the sunk costs fallacy. Treated as an individual "bias" but a lot of the examples (e.g. Concorde) come from group projects.
