What's the state of "apps" for Linux phones? I'm guessing there is no problem if you want to use ssh or python from a terminal. Might be interesting if someone were to review what phone-like apps there are, an how alpha they are. Camera app exists but crashes after taking photos. Texting works, but not for mms, GPS chip is on the PCB, but the driver still needs to be written, etc., etc..
- TobTobXX 5y agoThe crashes of the camera app are mostly gone or happen only at edge cases from my recent experience (PinePhone DE). I don't know about GPS, but it seems Gnome Maps works quite well on mobile (haven't tested thoroughly yet). I have a few hiccups with the mobile modem. But phosh (the DE I use) itself has a quite stable experience (~ like desktop gnome). GTK4+libadwaita are the current hype and they have taken this usecase really into consideration for this GTK release. (Qt is also still alive though.) What's still missing for me hardware-wise is only the battery. Software-wise, the largest missing feature is IM (WhatsApp/Signal/etc). I hope to bridge all IM over Matrix/XMPP whatever, which I can then access on mobile linux. And since the PinePhone is comparable to your usual smartphone in terms of size, carrying around an additional power banks seems to be worth it for me. Don't get me wrong: I'd not _recommend_ it. But I am willing to give up some UX for running this OS.
