More Data to Suggest That Moderate Alcohol Consumption Confers No Benefits
- meristohm 5y agoAnecdata: A few years back I scaled down my alcohol consumption because I was feeling poorly the following day, even after one drink. Early in 2020 I cut it to zero, easier with much less socializing away from the house, and I don’t miss it. Open to using it on holidays. Alcohol is energy-intensive to make, which makes it even easier to relegate to “rare luxury” category.
- jgalt212 5y ago> is energy-intensive to make sorry to be nit-picky as I otherwise don't contest anything else you're saying but at the of the day human existence "is energy-intensive to make". There's just no way around that.
- ctoth 5y agoI can't help but feel that better wording would do a lot to sell this more. Because, obviously, if alcohol had no benefits people wouldn't drink it, right? So perhaps phrasing more along the lines of isn't physically healthy or something? I donno but this has struck me as subtly dishonest for a while.
- blawson 5y agoBecause this is an aging blog, I'm guessing they focus on the ideas around remdesivir being potentially beneficial for longevity and its concentration in red wine.
- vanusa 5y agoI agree - on one hand the findings were basically helpful, in that they incrementally help debunk the (harmful) urban legend and industry propaganda that "moderate" drinking has a minor longevity benefit. But on the other hand -- was kind of an obvious omission, to the point of being basically dishonest, to reduce this to a blanket "alcohol has no benefit" pronouncement. People drink for a reason, and it isn't simply because they're addicted, or to "escape", or even to blunt social anxiety.
- deegles 5y agoIf procrastination had no benefits people wouldn't do it, right? :)
- Flatcircle 5y agoIn the future, people will marvel at how cigarettes were considered cancer causing but Alcohol wasn't. Alcohol is super cancer causing. Strange people don't talk about it.
- guilhas 5y ago"Evidence suggests that people who abstain from alcohol have a higher mortality rate than those who drink low to moderate amounts. However...." A post alleging that current evidence is wrong because... So there is no advantage in alcohol consumption. And does not go as far to say it is damaging Also alcohol doesn't mean anything, there is gin, beer, wine, etc... Good, cheap quality... And each one has different properties besides alcohol
- ohiovr 5y agoAlcohol makes you drunk. To some that is a benefit.
