I love Cloudflare, but these Image products are a black mark on their reputation.
Every point the author says is 100% correct. I'll add one more point, which ended up making it a total non-starter: you can't import lots of images because their rate limits are so pernicious. If you have tens of thousands or millions of images, keeping within their single digit per second rate limit, which appears to be totally non-negotiable, makes it impossible to add images at any scale.
They have another product called Cloudflare Images which can work from Workers: but here the pricing is almost absurd and from the data they show on their dashboard, they only cache a tiny percentage of the requests. This means you end up paying a lot more than makes sense.
- youngtaff 5y agoWhy do you want to import them – why not just fetch them from origin based on demand?
- simonswords82 5y agoI can't stand Cloudflare, the only cause of downtime we've in the last 5 years...we've switched to Microsoft Front door
- javajosh 5y agoContext-free recommendations for a competitor smacks of "jumping on the bandwagon", which isn't a good look for you or the product you're hawking.
- simonswords82 5y agoSorry may bad - I do see how it comes across that way but I'm not saying Microsoft's platform is perfect either or in any way hawking.
- danielrhodes 5y agoCloudflare is pretty great in a lot of ways. They have a lot of promising products, and I have never had problems with their reliability (and I've seen it handle billions of requests).
- Ensorceled 5y agoKind of negates the "Image store" feature of Cloudflare Images ...
- occoder 5y ago> I love Cloudflare Just a perspective from a user point of view, but I hate Cloudflare. All I remember about them is staring at their DDoS protection page for multiple seconds before a site's content loads. EDIT: I'd argue that DDoS protection should be provided on the network level, not on the application level by some Javascript on a page. So yes I do hate Cloudflare for providing that service.
- selcuka 5y agoThe site owner can enable or disable that feature, so it's actually the owner you should be hating. Or do you hate CloudFlare for offering such a (optional) feature?
- nsotelo 5y agoI direct my hate towards those who make this necessary.
- patrec 5y agoI’ve long taken Cloudflare to task for granting DDoS protection for countless DDoS-for-hire services, to no avail. I’ve maintained that Cloudflare has a blatant conflict of interest here, and that the DDoS-for-hire industry would quickly blast itself into oblivion because the proprietors of these attack services like nothing more than to turn their attack cannons on each other. Cloudflare has steadfastly maintained that picking and choosing who gets to use their network is a slippery slope that it will not venture toward. https://krebsonsecurity.com/2016/10/spreading-the-ddos-disease-and-selling-the-cure/ https://krebsonsecurity.com/2016/10/spreading-the-ddos-disea...
