Can’t figure out if this corporate greed or based on their costs going up due to inflation. I assume it’s the first as when costs go up they fire people.

This is only if you buy through a partner, which isn’t necessary for most small businesses who aren’t getting volume discounts. In those scenarios, it probably always made more sense to buy through the admin portal.

there aren't many reviewers of Libreoffice but they have had big improvements with regards to bug fixes in word compatibility in 7.2 and 7.3. has anyone done a up to date comparison because i have been daily driving libreoffice for many many years and it has come a long way recently. i mean if i find a bug i report it but someone can do an honest review with say 7.3 beta even, that would be great for popularity because for me personally, LO does "99%" of the job and i am not the one who necessarily demands the .1% be fixed before i can port over.

The main issue with libreoffice that i had was working with big excel files (lots of rows 10k or lots of sheets with references between them)

I find the opposite. Excel struggles with large files but libreoffice has no trouble, is faster and has regex. It's missing a few key functions though.

oh boy. regex is like amazing. i had built this massive calc file for regexing bank statements and had found like 100+ parameters/regex formulae. one day decided to try to use excel and boy i was surprised. excel didn't know what it was. i personally find calc or writer to fit m workflow and i am sure it will suit the majority of users out there.

Excel has a scripting/macro language that allows custom functions, including fairly easy access to regular expressions. I got a job a couple years ago that didn't officially involve programming, and the first thing I did was a quick & dirty implementation of most of Oracle's regex function interface. This sort of thing can be reused with most Microsoft Office applications, too.
