My first time in SF was... interesting. Where I'm from (Ireland), a red means stop, not "only stop if you might be driving into traffic", which is what it seems to boil down to in the US. Let's just say I got a _nasty_ surprise when I discovered turns on red were a thing. It's without a doubt one of the most pedestrian unfriendly bits of law I've come across.
