This court case is a big deal because it has the potential to set a precedent on whether users have the legal standing (as third-party beneficiaries, not copyright holders) to sue a developer with the goal of compelling the developer (via an order of specific performance) to release source code of proprietary software that incorporates code from a copyleft license, when the developer is violating the license by keeping the code closed source.
If the SFC wins, the new precedent would make it easier for the free software community to demand developers who violate copyleft licenses to rectify their violations. A settlement would not generate a precedent, so this case would need to be decided to obtain the SFC's desired result.
