Open-source Vizio lawsuit takes an ugly turn
- ivraatiems 5y agoThis is a silly take. Removal is a 100% normal thing and is very common in suits of this nature. I agree Vizio ought to just settle this matter and comply with the licenses in the future, but there is nothing dramatic about what happened here.
- commoner 5y agoThis court case is a big deal because it has the potential to set a precedent on whether users have the legal standing (as third-party beneficiaries, not copyright holders) to sue a developer with the goal of compelling the developer (via an order of specific performance) to release source code of proprietary software that incorporates code from a copyleft license, when the developer is violating the license by keeping the code closed source. If the SFC wins, the new precedent would make it easier for the free software community to demand developers who violate copyleft licenses to rectify their violations. A settlement would not generate a precedent, so this case would need to be decided to obtain the SFC's desired result.
