Bob Dole and Jack Kemp (1996)
- mberning 5y agoBalanced budget, Americans should be judged as individuals, and drug use is an epidemic. Literally hitler by today's standards. Now we want more spending, it’s fashionable to judge by skin color and gender or impute motives, and drugs are just fine mmmkay.
- tootie 5y agoBalanced budget is genuinely a senseless goal. It's a good tag line, but it's not actually practical or useful. And fighting drug epidemic has had bipartisan support for decades, so it's not a controversial one at all.
- pstuart 5y agoThe War on Drugs was started by Nixon as a tool to silence those he considered his enemies, e.g., hippies and people of color: "The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people," Ehrlichman told journalist Dan Baum in 1994. "You understand what I'm saying? We knew we couldn't make it illegal to be either against the war or blacks, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities."
- philistine 5y agoThe website is now down. Who knew, Bob Dole had a dead man's switch for his 1996 campaign website!
- Angostura 5y agoApparently he has risen from the grave then.
- momothereal 5y agoIncludes a pecan cookie recipe from Dole's wife: http://www.dolekemp96.org/about/cookies/cookies.html http://www.dolekemp96.org/about/cookies/cookies.html
- pomian 5y agothe end of an era - still using margarine! but looks like a good recipe to try.
- turing_complete 5y agoBob lived to be 98. How bad can Margarine be?
- kortilla 5y agoWell it still tastes the same, so awful ;)
- blululu 5y agoWell as a conservative he should support the same traditional ingredients that our founding mothers used to defeat the British in a bake off at the battle of Yorktown. Jokes aside, margarine sucks. Even if you don’t worry about the potential health consequences the taste and consistency are not as good as butter. Bob Dole grew up on a dairy farm in an era where it was illegal to sell yellow margarine there is a decent chance he didn’t eat much margarine as a kid.
- dnissley 5y agoAnd it's vegan!
- dehrmann 5y agoPro tip: replace the pecans with candied pecans.
- varenc 5y agoThe site is down but you can see the archive.org backup here: https://web.archive.org/web/20211130194555/http://www.dolekemp96.org/main.htm https://web.archive.org/web/20211130194555/http://www.doleke... Wow, Bob Dole's campaign talks about internet policy in 1996 here: http://www.dolekemp96.org/agenda/issues/internet.htm http://www.dolekemp96.org/agenda/issues/internet.htm Really interesting comparing notes. > "Bob Dole strongly supports the observations made in the recent National Research Council report that widespread use of encryption to promote information security outweighs the difficulties encrypted communications place on law enforcement. Economic espionage from foreign countries and companies is a serious threat, and Bob Dole believes Americans should have the right to guard themselves using encryption." > "Promote policies that preserve and advance the openness and decentralization of computer-based communications."
- buescher 5y agoYeah it was Clinton and his administration that was pushing the Clipper chip with the backdoored Skipjack cypher. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clipper_chip https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clipper_chip
- lelandfe 5y agoWhich should be example #1 when debating against government-mandated back doors.
- fisherjeff 5y ago“Bob Dole strongly supports the observations made in the recent National Research Council report that widespread use of encryption to promote information security outweighs the difficulties encrypted communications place on law enforcement.” Impossible to imagine seeing this anywhere near a campaign website these days

- Mary-Jane 5y agoA conservative wanting to limit the power of government? Shocking! Seriously though, this position is consistent with conservative beliefs; why do you find it hard to believe? Even the infamous Rush Limbaugh opposed letting the government force Apple to decrypt the San Bernardino shooter's iPhone.
- digisign 5y agoThe new thinking is to support LE without question. Nuance getting scarcer and scarcer.
- sul_tasto 5y agoI think a lot changed after 9/11/01.
- caslon 5y agoNote the "these days" in the comment you're replying to. Ted Cruz: https://reason.com/2016/02/18/ted-cruz-says-apple-needs-to-comply-with/ https://reason.com/2016/02/18/ted-cruz-says-apple-needs-to-c... "On Tuesday, June 23, Senators Graham (R-SC), Cotton (R-AR), and Blackburn (R-TN) introduced a bill that is a full-frontal nuclear assault on encryption in the United States. You can find the bill text here. It's been formally introduced as Senate bill 4051, which you can track here. (Other reactions to the bill so far: EFF, Techdirt.)" http://cyberlaw.stanford.edu/blog/2020/06/there%E2%80%99s-now-even-worse-anti-encryption-bill-earn-it-doesn%E2%80%99t-make-earn-it-bill-ok http://cyberlaw.stanford.edu/blog/2020/06/there%E2%80%99s-no... It isn't within the party line to support encryption any longer, because there are no conservatives in government.
- throwawayboise 5y agoAhh, 640x480
- jacquesc 5y agohttp://www.dolekemp96.org/news/releases/proct0796a.htm http://www.dolekemp96.org/news/releases/proct0796a.htm "When users first visit the site, they are given the option of setting up a custom Dole Web page. Each custom page contains a personal tool bar that welcomes the user by name, alerts them to an electronic "In Box" containing any new press releases or other campaign materials posted since their last visit, directs them to briefing papers on issues in which they expressed interest, and offers a home-state icon for local information about the Clinton record and the Dole agenda in that state." Ahead of its time for sure
- HorizonXP 5y agoRIP Bob Dole. I'm so glad this website still exists, and I sincerely hope it stays online forever. It brought on a wave of nostalgia, reminding me what the Internet was like in the mid-90s when I was 11 years old.
- breakyerself 5y agoLooks like he was better on the environment than the guys who came after him. Seems like republicans protecting the environment died with the WW2 generation.
- orzig 5y agoSay what you want about the visual design, but (at least at 5:30 AM Eastern) each page is extremely quick to load!
- dredmorbius 5y agoThem absolutely-placed page elements though... (View Source is your ... nightmare fuel.)
- darkcha0s 5y agoNot mobile friendly. My experience is ruined.
- dredmorbius 5y agoInterestingly, on the Agenda page, the Crime Plan links are missing. http://www.dolekemp96.org/agenda/agenda.html http://www.dolekemp96.org/agenda/agenda.html The Wayback Machine never seems to have captured anything there, other than the icon: https://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.dolekemp96.org/agenda/crime/\\ https://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.dolekemp96.org/agen...* Though it seems to turn up here: https://web.archive.org/web/20201112015944/http://www.dolekemp96.org/agenda/issues/crime.htm https://web.archive.org/web/20201112015944/http://www.doleke...
