Why Intel? I'm on a Ryzen 7 ThinkPad and run Ubuntu without any problems.
- blacksmith_tb 5y agoI am guessing they meant "Intel networking hw" (typing this on an Ryzen 7 Asus running Ubuntu too). But that's obviously too simple, it would be better advice to just say "find someone on the 'net who describes installing and using the distro you are considering on the machine you are considering". Though really I haven't had any serious hardware problems under Linux for years (but I have a small stable of machines I am not changing all the time).
- jeltz 5y agoI am pretty sure they refer to Intel networking and sound hardware. Because AMD has good stuff for both CPUs and graphics while I do not know of any reliable alternatives for networking and sound.
- AnthonyMouse 5y agoIt's not about the CPU. Intel makes everything and is known to have good Linux support. You can buy a system where "lspci" lists nothing but Intel hardware, and that system will run Linux well. So will many other systems. AMD CPUs and GPUs in particular are good. Nvidia not so much. The vast majority of network adapters are no problem, but a few stupid ones do exist. But it's easier to say "just get everything Intel" than to enumerate the entire hardware compatibility list.
- Mikeb85 5y agoIntel everything usually means Intel graphics, video, sound, etc... AMD is pretty good these days, it all mostly works. Few bugs now and then. Intel everything is super solid.
