That's not what institutional racism means. Institutional racism must refer to an actual 'instituion' such as a government, legal group, or the like making rules and reuglations to enforce and codify personal or situational racism.
Jim Crowe laws are institutional racism.
Individual appriasers may be personally racist.
The KKK are terrorists (who are personally racists and wish they could make institutions racist too).
- Ancapistani 5y agoTo be fair, the term "institutional racism" is usually intended to mean what would be more precisely termed "systemic racism". It bothers me a little bit too but at least it's mostly consistent. What really grinds my gears is when people call it "systematic racism". "Systematic" and "systemic" are not even close to synonyms. No one is out there making sure everyone gets a little bit of racism and no one is missed.
- detaro 5y ago> what would be more precisely termed "systemic racism" > grinds my gears is when people call it "systemic racism" clearly you wanted to use a different word in one of those - which one is it?
- Ancapistani 5y agoHeh - thanks. The second instance should be "systematic". I have a browser extension that automatically replaces the term. I've just "cloud-to-butt"ed myself.
