I have used Inkscape extensively in several professional projects - in fact I designed an entire custom icon set consisting of hundreds of SVG images. The Inkscape executable even supports command line arguments that invoke various functions so it can be used for batch processing and in scripts (I wrote a Perl script to automate several tasks involving my icon set). So yes it can absolutely be used for business!
