The reason outdoor shadows appear blue is obvious in retrospect (think about it for a second if you want to...): Objects in the sun's shadow are usually lit primarily by the sky and the sky is blue! Maybe this occurs naturally to others, but I never thought about it until it was pointed out to me in a photography article.
