Maybe you could inline some LADSPA compression filter with PulseAudio? I recently struggled to find all of the channels in my DTS audio collection. Turns out that it many tracks the important bits were hiding in the front-left-center and right-left-center channels which the hardware decoder in the sound system send nowhere but I was able to find via software decoding. Completely absurd to have to hack so hard on this stuff, even if I love the process!
