This is really cool. It should be obvious that a few thousand hand-rolled assembly opcodes targeting a fixed architecture would win the race. If the size of the solution grew a couple of orders of magnitude larger though, I'd expect that the micro optimization challenge would overwhelm the author and compilers would be more competitive.
