Arguably that's what savings and sabbaticals are for. I've had several colleges take an extended (albeit unpaid) holiday to go travelling or sailing or something. I'm not saying a load more PTO isn't worth it, but there are definitely ways to do this kind of thing, and it's worth asking your company about it.
