Karpenter has been open source for a little while. We've covered it a few times on our containers from the couch youtube channel. There were some features that limited how you could use it though. Things like workload zone spread, and some taints/tolerations settings were not available until the recent 0.5.0 release. With those features now available we consider it ready for most general use cases and that's why it was officially announced as "production ready".
