Twitter's ad targeting is atrocious and they're just throwing money away. My experience is that the ads are either random national brands, semi-spam as-seen-on-TV-quality stuff, or wildly mistargeted things. E.g. Twitter keeps showing me ads targeted to an oncologist, which is bizarre. Or they are for things on the opposite side of the country from me. My interests are fairly straightforward and Google shows me well-targeted ads, but Twitter's targeting is just a disaster. Before moving to a completely new business model, Twitter should at least try some decent ad targeting.
- esyir 5y agoIs Twitter's ad targeting bad, or are you an outlier case. If I'd use myself as an example, with a company with generally considered "good" ad-targeting (GOOG), I get really odd ads like those for spinal implants. It could be that you've fallen into one of those minima.
- arthurofbabylon 5y agoTwitter’s ad targeting is so bad. As bad as the bottom of clickbait topical articles. They currently rely on volume and “clicks.” They have a reputation of being a very cheap CPM ad platform… and that is not a good thing. For an ad-driven business with clear interest indicators, it is astonishing that Twitter hasn’t addressed this advertiser quality problem. Low hanging fruit at their revenue bottle neck.
