If anyone is curious about the differences between Karpenter and Kubernetes Cluster Autoscaler I created a short video to explain some of the key differences in node provisioning and management.

- ecliptik 5y agoThank you for the video, we use Spot Ocean for something similar and were looking at possibility replacing it with managed node groups or Karpenter now. I was a bit confused about what was actually released today though. This TC article [1] says it was announced today at re:invent. The AWS blog post [2] doesn’t say released but that it’s ready for production now. I also found youtube videos from last spring and Archive.org has snapshots from the summer, but this is really the first I’ve heard of Karpenter. Was it fully released today with the repo made public or has it been sort of out there but not really promoted heavily until today? 1. https://techcrunch.com/2021/11/30/aws-launches-karpenter-an-open-source-autoscaler-for-kubernetes-clusters/ https://techcrunch.com/2021/11/30/aws-launches-karpenter-an-... 2. https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/aws/introducing-karpenter-an-open-source-high-performance-kubernetes-cluster-autoscaler/ https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/aws/introducing-karpenter-an-op...
- JustinGarrison 5y agoKarpenter has been open source for a little while. We've covered it a few times on our containers from the couch youtube channel. There were some features that limited how you could use it though. Things like workload zone spread, and some taints/tolerations settings were not available until the recent 0.5.0 release. With those features now available we consider it ready for most general use cases and that's why it was officially announced as "production ready".
