Some governments lobbied by big business smear self employment as a way of avoiding taxes. In my country they restricted service based business with revenue tax (over 50% effective) and no ability to claim expenses. The legislation is so complex, corporations avoid buying services out of fear of getting a fine and business goes to big corporations that provide workers on demand. It's funny that these big corporations are actually involved in tax avoidance, but corrupt government say nothing about that. So far at least 35% quit self employment as it is pointless.
