This article is about cobalt and the poor conditions for cobalt miners in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Cobalt is often used in cathodes for lithium ion batteries.
Apart from trying to fix the Congo conditions or avoid Congo-sourced cobalt, battery users and their suppliers have reacted by:
- Developing more cobalt mining projects and expanding existing ones in Canada, Australia, and the United States
- Switching to cobalt-free cathode chemistries like lithium iron phosphate: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithium_iron_phosphate_battery https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithium_iron_phosphate_battery
The article does not mention these outside-Congo developments, presumably because it's doing a deep dive on the Congo issues. But for readers who care about battery technology in general, note that these issues are more of a speed bump than a wall when it comes to scaling up lithium ion battery production.
