San Francisco is roughly 1/6 the size of Singapore and roughly 1/10 the size of Hong Kong.
Pop density is ~6.8k/sq km in HK and 8358/sq km in Singapore. In SF that number is under 500/sq km.
There are a lot of similarities but also key cultural differences that make that possible. I suspect that Americans won’t accept that level of density - probably because there are more rural opportunities. Look inside the room of some of this government housing in HK. I would gladly rent something like that in SF and it would be a downgrade from my van but I can imagine many of my peers who can’t handle it.[0]

- thghtihadanacct 5y agoWhere did you get 500/sq km? On wikipedia it clearly states 7,194/km2. A number that is more akin to the other cities mentioned. Have you ever been to SF? If SF gets any more dense the bay is going to be a permanent cess pool. Further, the buildings are already sinking. We dont need to build more housing in SF just so people feel they deserve to live there can do so cheaply. There are plenty of other places to live. And if you need someone else to flip burgers for you in SF then you should patronize places that pay a living wage. Also, where did that burger come from? Wasnt raised in SF ... we dont need to concentrate more people in a place that already has all its food shipped there, like Singapore.
