Many top level soccer players recently have collapsed from cardiac arrest.

- pen2l 5y agoThere's a selection bias at play here that one would be remiss to simply ignore -- elite athletes are likely on gear, the cardiovascular disease is probably due to misuse of said gear for a large part of these deaths. There's recently been a swathe of deaths in the fitness industry but in that space it's clearer to see, every other guy is on TRT and half of them at least admit it. There's a running strain of Roganism as well, that healthy people don't need the vaccine and the elite athletes might suffer in some unknown way from it.
- meheleventyone 5y agoThat hypothesis should be demonstrable. With the small numbers talked about it’s probably just a statistical blip combined with these people having a high public profile. As the article notes whilst it’s rare it does happen. For example in this same period as these footballers I had a heart attack whilst exercising. Whilst at 39 I’m older it’s still very young. I am also pretty fit and have no obvious physical heart problems. So right now the doctors think I just got unlucky. No steroid or drug use on my part either. This was also prior to getting vaccinated and contracting Covid.
- rscho 5y agoWhile what you say is definitely likely, hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM) seems to be associated with professional soccer player status, and is believed to be responsible for some part of those sudden deaths in players.
- tata71 5y ago"Gear" is drugs, for any unknowing Westerners.
- native_samples 5y agoBut they would not have suddenly started drug abuse in 2021. The reason this is catching attention is that there's a big jump in the number of athletes suddenly collapsing or retiring from sports due to cardiac issues. The number I've seen is 6x, which was based on comparing verified reports so far this year with an academic paper from the early 2000s that provided baseline numbers. 6x is a lot.
- brigandish 5y agoI heard about that too but I also know that one of those players was definitely not vaccinated (the one at Wigan, if I recall correctly?) so that undermines the link somewhat. I mean, it could be a coincidental cluster, it could be that footballers are reaching a limit in terms of fitness that we'll now see more of this, it could be… anything. Again, more investigation is needed. As to the link between increased heart problems, like the doctor in the link I shared, I've previously argued that it could be due to lockdown, things like people staying away from hospitals, getting access to doctors, sitting at home too much etc. I'm also keeping in mind that, as we're always reminded, these type of events occur more due to COVID-19 than the vaccines, so it's possible that the vaccines are producing cardiac problems that the disease would've produced but the vaccine came first. Basically, I can see a lot of possibilities and want to keep an open mind, and I certainly don't want to get into either of the politically driven sides that have formed around this virus.
