WD-40 Became Rust’s Worst Enemy
- clort 5y agoWD-40 is pretty good stuff but I understand it is not permitted on eg Lloyds insured ships. The problem being that it is a very good solvent for oil products but it itself is reasonably volatile and once it dissolved the oil coating on steel parts it will evaporate, leaving the steel exposed in a marine atmosphere which will allow it to rust more than if you just left it. There are other compounds which are preferentially used to provide a lubricating or anti-corrosive coating (eg Boeshield T9) WD-40 is excellent for cleaning your hands after working on your bicycle chain. Of course, you could wear nitrile gloves but.. Also, WD-40 is a good coolant/lubricant for machining aluminium.
- sschueller 5y agoWD-40 is also widely miss used as a lubricant where oil or grease should be used.
- orliesaurus 5y agoWhat's the best way to know when it is okay to use Wd40? I used to wd40 my bike's chain until they told me not to at my local bike shop. But they did not really given me a reason...it worked fine!
- mlindner 5y agoWD40 is a solvent, it removes other oils and greases and gunk. You can use it on things to clean them, but then you need to add grease back on after it's been cleaned.
