I think this is irrelevant. What we should know at this point is if mask mandates make any difference reducing infections in a region compared with no mask mandates.
But there seems to be very little science being done for the last two years and too much politics. Too many measures to avoid responsibility and zero measures and control groups to check if interventions do anything.
- midenginedcoupe 5y agoWhy would you write this? It's trivial to check whether science has been done or not; a quick internet search will tell you. In fact the very first result I get is this: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7883189/ https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7883189/ Just because you haven't looked past the politics to find it (and as far as I've seen it's only the anti-maskers who make it political, everyone else is going by the informed recommendation, not what their political "team" tells them to do) doesn't mean it's not there, or being done continuously and thoroughly. PS. The US is unfortunately one big control group.

- tinus_hn 5y agoIf you look deeper it’s easy to find research that supports either point of view. And really, it’s not convincing to see articles showing basically no effect and articles showing 100% effect being included in meta studies that conclude 50% effect. Just as the article you quote, it doesn’t actually study the effect of some specified type of masks on the spread of covid, it states ‘the consensus is that covid spreads this way and the masks help against that kind of spread’. Sorry, but if it really is that clear why doesn’t it consistently show in practice?
- labawi 5y agoWhen I go shopping in shop with FFP2 mask mandate, about 10% of people wear the mask properly. The rest have gaping holes between their faces and masks. BTW that includes me, as I see no point in the benefit/discomfort ratio, being vaccinated and moderately young. Light incidental exposure may even help boost the immune response, though I will reevaluate once B1.1.529 is common. IMO, those who want to, can¹ wear masks properly and then it's very effective (see infections in covid hospital personnel), but masks tend to be uncomfortable, so most people don't. ¹ some can't, but then maybe we also shouldn't be driving so we don't kill people that way
- guilhas 5y agoExactly most people don't even use N95 masks
