Ransomware, as terrible as it is, has really put a gun to the head of Managers and Luddites alike that don't think security is something they need to bother with. It's always the first corner to be cut and the last debt to be repaid, if ever. I almost always feel a sense of schadenfreude when a company with terrible security practices gets hit with ransomware costing them millions. I always imagine that one engineer sitting there thinking to themselves "told you so", while casually browsing for a new job.
