Where did this improvement come from? If I had to guess, I'd say almost entirely from safety improvements in automobiles. It seems like this perfect little engineering problem (reduce # of deaths/serious injury of people in our cars) which lends itself to continuous improvement over time. Collect and analyze data, develop and apply technology based on results, test improvement effectiveness, iterate forever.
