The Great Contradiction
- Nevermark 5y agoAfter the origin of the Big Bang, I find the lack of any evidence for other civilizations to be the most mysterious part of our reality. Technological civilizations should expand exponentially and be nearly impossible to eradicate once interstellar travel, however slow, has been achieved. So I find explanations using concepts like "average civilization lifetimes" to either be nonsensical, or implicitly assume no extra-solar colonization. Perhaps civilizations destroy themselves from within their own solar system with near complete reliability. That seems to be the only explanation that fits the facts, as far as I can tell. The exception being the fancier explanation that civilizations don't bother leaving their solar systems, as they quickly move on to other dimensions more rewarding than expanding visibly in this universe.
