Over here, contracts with telecom giants like Bell are keeping some media (e.g. HBO content) away from stand-alone streaming. They have their own pet streaming services that require a cable subscription. Possibly factoring among the reasons GoT and the like had been so rabidly pirated.
When not everything is available, online rental is now a more viable option than it once was. I wonder why it's only the tech giants like MS who offer this. Why isn't Netflix also allowing digital rentals? I'd rather not pay MS, Apple or Google to see a movie over 50 years old.
edit: according to this https://blog.playstation.com/2021/03/02/playstation-store-to-discontinue-movie-and-tv-purchases-and-rentals/ https://blog.playstation.com/2021/03/02/playstation-store-to... even Sony stopped (or will stop) offering digital tv/movie purchases and rentals owing to the popularity of streaming. From memory, these were expensive. I guess there's a costly overhead to the service.
- greenshackle2 5y agoYou don't need cable (anymore?) to subscribe to Crave.
- slothtrop 5y agoSeems that's right, however according to this - https://www.finder.com/ca/internet-tv/cravetv https://www.finder.com/ca/internet-tv/cravetv you need to pay $19.98/mo + tax for Crave + HBO. There is no stand-alone HBO package in Canada, because of the Bell contract. Admittedly it's not much cheaper in the U.S and also owned by a large conglomerate.
- greenshackle2 5y agoYes, I'm subscribed and I don't have cable. They changed the packages recently. HBO is no longer optional. The basic package is now $20 and includes HBO. But they added a new cheaper "mobile" plan which is $10, still includes HBO, but you can only watch on one device at a time.
